Adoption

GPA-MoKan is first and foremost dedicated to moving Kansas and Missouri retired racing greyhounds into adoption.  Greyhounds placed through our program usually are between 18 months and four years old. These ex-racers are intelligent, quiet, clean, gentle, good-natured, adaptable dogs who adjust readily to their new home environment. They are eager to please and respond positively to any attention. They seem grateful for their new homes and regard their new owners with never-ending affection. They do not require a great deal of space to run, as many people think, but they do need exercise. Inside the house they enjoy curling up in a corner on a soft blanket.

Greyhounds spend most of their lives in the company of other dogs, their trainers, and handlers. Greyhounds have all the advantages of breeding and training when it comes to being a good pet. Their sociability generally makes them great with other pets (including cats!). Their temperament makes them wonderful around children and friends. Their intelligence and breed make them perfect house pets, clean, quiet, and a loving companion. Whether you are a family looking for a playful friend, or an individual looking for a devoted companion, a well-mannered greyhound could be just the pet for you. Because greyhounds have been raised in kennels, a careful introduction into a suitable home environment is a must for successful placements.

Before You Adopt:  GPA-MoKan does require that new adopters read either Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan or Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood prior to the home visit.  If there are children 13 or younger in the home, we also require Living With Kids and Dogs...Without Losing Your Mind by Colleen Pelar.  All can be found at Amazon.com.

The dogs below are available for adoption.  Please contact us at adopt@gpamokan.org or fill out an application and fax\mail it to us.  (Adobe Reader needed)

Simon is a red, 2 year old male.  Simon is a very happy boy who loves to play.  He learns new things very quickly and responds immediately to the word "no".  He is quite the lovebug and will be great on walks.  His greyhound foster brothers and sister are getting along great with Simon and he does well with kids too.  Simon also LOVES his baby pool!  Simon is probably not cat safe but will be fine with medium sized dogs.

Candle is a 5 year old dark brindle female.  She is very sweet and playful and gets along great with her foster greyhound brother.  Candle loves attention from people of all ages.  She has successfully completed basic obedience class.  Candle is cat and small dog safe.

Daytona is a fabulous 5 year old red male with a black mask.  Daytona is a complete lovebug and he would happily sit in your lap for ear scratches.  He loves playing with stuffed animals, swimming in the baby pools and he's getting along great with his foster sisters.  He is crazy about kids of all age...he is an all around happy guy!  Daytona is not cat safe.

Ben is a 4 year old red brindle male with a dusting of white on the tip of his nose.  He is sweet and very playful!  He loves stuffed squeaky toys and enjoys a dip in the baby pool.  For now anyway, he likes to be near the human of the house and wants to have his ears scratched.  When he wags his tail, it spins in circles.  We do not believe that Ben is cat or small animal safe but, we will test him very soon.

Asia is a darling little 5 year old dark brindle female.  She is a very happy girl who likes to check out all areas of her yard.  We are still watching her personality develop but so far she's a sweet, sweet girl.  Asia is good with kids and is cat and small animal correctable.  We are still working with her.

!!!ADOPTED!!!

Echo is a beautiful, black 3 year old female with extremely tall ears.  She loves to pounce on and play with her toys, she's extremely sweet and loves to be petted.  Echo will do best as a second dog, especially with another dog that will play with her.  Echo is bird, cat and small dog safe.

Sophie is a 2 year old red brindle female.  Sophie is perfectly adorable, very sweet and loving and is just a silly little nut-ball.  She is crazy about toys, she picks up commands very quickly and she loves to swim.  She has very funny and floppy ears that she seems to have no control over. She is getting along great with her greyhound foster brothers and sister.  Her foster mom reports her to be one of the favorite foster dogs ever.  Sophie is cat and small dog safe.

Annie is a 5 year old dark brindle female.  Annie is a sweet girl who is quickly learning the about all the luxuries a foster home has to offer.  She never raced so she is not crate trained and she will best as a second dog.  She is a happy, happy girl with a happy, happy tail.  Annie is cat and small dog safe.

!!!ADOPTED!!!

Twinkie is a 3 year old dark brindle female with a very soft coat.  She loves spending time with her people and can't get enough of belly and ear scratches.  She is a happy girl who already understands most of the rules of the house and is described as a very smart girl.  She likes to play with her foster kids in the yard but, her children should be older and understand that her bed is off limits.  She walks great on lead and is getting along well with her foster greyhound sister.  She is not cat safe but will fine with medium sized dogs.

!!!ADOPTED!!!

Whitney is a 4 year old dark red brindle girlie that has white socks on her front feet and the perfect kissing spot on her nose.  She is a happy and friendly girl who loves to play.  She's doing great with the children in her foster home and with her greyhound foster sister and brother.  Whitney is the litter mate to Shelby below and Tanner pictured above.  Whitney is cat correctable but does fine with small dogs.

Shelby is a darling red fawn, 4 year old girl.  She is described as a very happy and playful girl who loves to give kisses and get belly rubs.  She does great with people of all shapes and sizes.  You may be able to see from the picture that her right, back leg has had an injury.  After thousands of dollars of surgery, her leg is still not great and she has some trouble using it.  She will still make a great pet and, don't let that leg fool you, she is still pretty darned fast.  Shelby is a littermate to Whitney pictured above.  Shelby is not cat and small dog safe.

!!!ADOPTED!!!

Madison is a 4 year old fawn princess.  She is described as being very sweet but, just a bit shy. She is doing really well with the children and male greyhound in her foster home.  She's still a bit timid with men but, her foster home is working on that.  Madison is the litter mate to Bear and Mocha pictured below.  Madison is cat and small dog safe.

Bear is a 4 year old dark red boy.  He is a very cool and energetic boy who enjoys admiring himself in the mirror, stove and any other reflective surface and with good reason because he is stunningly beautiful.  He's not so sure that bath-time is very much fun but, playing is A LOT of fun!  He loves cuddling and giving kisses and when in the car, he also likes to drive.  He's a busy boy that would enjoy obedience training or being a jogging partner.  He's getting along great with his foster brother.  Bear is the littermate to Madison pictured above and Mocha pictured below.  Bear is not cat and small animal safe.

ADOPTION PENDING

Sunny is a 4 year old small brindle girl.  She is a very sweet girl who is still figuring out about life in a home.  As you can see, she was far more interested in the guy petting her than she was getting her picture taken.  Sunny is literally a lap dog so it's a good thing she's so small.  She is getting along great with her greyhound foster brothers and sisters and loves the human children in her foster family as well.  Sunny is not cat and small dog safe.

ADOPTION PENDING

Vanda is a 2 year old red female with a black mask.  Vanda's personality is still developing.  She is still unsure about pretty much everything in the house but is doing a great job of learning the ropes from her greyhound foster brothers and sister.  She is starting to explore things on her own more and more.  She's been caught a couple of times laying on her back so we know she's happy.  She's also starting to sneakily pick things up like clothes out of the laundry hamper.  She will kiss fingers, toes and now her foster mom's nose (not necessarily in that order thankfully). Vanda was scared to death of the cat she met.

Mocha is a 4 year old red female with a black mask.  She is a happy and friendly girl who does great with children.  She is very playful and likes her toys; she also likes to sunbathe in the yard.  Mocha is a littermate to Madison and Bear pictured above.  Mocha is cat and small dog safe.
